“House Establishes Bipartisan Task Force on Artificial Intelligence”

Washington: A bipartisan task force on artificial intelligence (AI) has been established by Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. The task force’s goal is to identify ways for Congress to protect the nation’s security from both present and future threats while maintaining America’s position as the world leader in AI innovation.

Twelve members representing important committees of jurisdiction have been appointed to the task force by Speaker Johnson and Leader Jeffries. Vice-Chair Ted Lieu (CA-36) and Chairman Jay Obernolte (CA-23) will co-chair the group. The task force will make an effort to compile an extensive report that includes guiding principles, recommendations for the future, and nonpartisan policy ideas created through discussions with relevant committees.

According to Speaker Mike Johnson, “As progress in artificial intelligence holds the capacity to rapidly transform our economy and society, it is vital for Congress to work in a bipartisan manner to understand both the promises and complexities of this transformative technology and to develop plans accordingly.” “I am pleased to join Leader Jeffries in announcing this new bipartisan task force on Artificial Intelligence to ensure that America remains at the forefront in this strategic domain.”

“Given the challenges ahead, Congress should continue to encourage innovation, foster our nation’s competitive edge, safeguard our national security, and carefully consider which guardrails may be needed to ensure the development of secure and trustworthy technology,” stated Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. “It is incumbent upon Congress to make those promising successes in artificial intelligence practical and ensure that everyday Americans benefit equitably from these advancements.” “That is why I am pleased to join Speaker Johnson in announcing this new bipartisan task force on Artificial Intelligence, which will work alongside Chairman Obernolte, Vice-Chair Lieu, and the rest of the task force to address these issues in a bipartisan manner.”

“The rise of artificial intelligence also presents a unique set of challenges and certain guardrails should be put in place for the security of the American people,” said Chairman Jay Obernolte (CA-23). “As new breakthroughs emerge in AI, Congress and our federal partners must step up.” “House Republicans and Democrats will work together to produce a comprehensive report detailing necessary regulations and congressional actions to enhance security for American consumers and to promote continued investment and innovation in AI.”

“The United States has led the world in the development of advanced AI, and we must work to ensure that AI realizes its tremendous potential to improve the lives of people across our nation,” stated Vice-Chair Ted Lieu (CA-36). “I am eager to work with Co-Chairman Jay Obernolte and the rest of the task force to lead bipartisan efforts to address these important issues.”

“I thank Leader Jeffries and Speaker Johnson for establishing this bipartisan House task force on Artificial Intelligence,” stated Representative Obernolte. “AI has the potential to change our lives as we look to the future. How can we make sure AI advances civilization rather than causes harm? I realize it won’t be simple, quick, or a one-time job—as a former computer science major—but I think Congress will be crucial to the development of AI in the future.” Ted Lieu (CA-36), the vice-chair, continued, “I am delighted to see so many members of Congress from both political perspectives come together in agreement.”

Democratic Congressman Hakeem Jeffries remarked, “I am honoured to be joining Congressman Jay Obernolte in leading this task force on AI and am grateful to Speaker Johnson for the opportunity.” “I look forward to working with bipartisan colleagues from both the Senate and the House, as well as with the Democratic Caucus and the Republican Conference, to find meaningful, bipartisan solutions regarding AI.”
